Mattress Men to Premiere at HotDocs in Toronto

So yesterday it was announced that ‘Mattress Men’, the feature documentary I spent a large part of last year editing for director Colm Quinn will have its world premiere at North America’s largest documentary film festival, HotDocs.

The film takes a peak behind the mattress telling the true story the man who made the legend that is Mattress Mick.

In an attempt to save his struggling mattress business during the recession, sixty-something Michael Flynn teams up with aspiring filmmaker Paul Kelly to reinvent himself as the eccentric online persona ‘Mattress Mick’. Through Paul’s zany videos and creative use of social media Mattress Mick quickly becomes an unlikely local celebrity. However, as the business and Mick’s profile begins to grow, their friendship comes under increasing pressure.

Mattress Men is directed by Colm Quinn and is the first feature-length film from Dublin-based independent production companies El Zorrero Films and Faction Films. Mattress Men was funded by the Irish Film Board. The Film was produced by Dave Clarke and Ciaran Deeney with myself cutting, Colm shooting and Michael Fleming composing.

Earlier this year the same team (except me) produced one of the ‘After 16’ shorts Baring Arms which you can watch now on the RTE Player here. Its a great short, beautifully edited by Jordan Montminy that you should definitely check out.

Mattress Men will screen at HotDocs on the 3rd, 4th and 6th of May as part of the “Future Cult Classics” programme.

The announcement yesterday created quite a bit of buzz with the world clearly hungry for as much Mattress Mick as they can handle. Articles about the great mans forthcoming Toronto adventures appeared in Hot Press, the Daily Edge, Film Ireland and beyond.

Other Irish titles playing the festival include ‘The Land of the Enlightened’ and ‘Booby Sands:66 Days’. I’m looking forward to catching them at the festival.

Keep up to date with the project on twitter at @mattressMenFilm and the films official Facebook page

In the meantime, why not watch The Mattress Mick music video which features in the documentary ‘Back With a Bang’ to get a sense of what it is that Paul and Mick are all about…

Standby Screens in Cork this Weekend!!!

Really looking forward to seeing STANDBY in Cork this weekend. There is a Gala screening of the film this Saturday at 9:00 in the beautiful surroundings of the Cork Opera House as part of the Cork Film Festival. This is the first time members of the public can see the film and I am excited to see how they respond.

The film is the feature film debut of directors Rob and Ronan Burke, the lads previously directed several award winning short films and its a hoot. Its a really sweet, very funny, very Irish take on the romantic comedy genre. It stars Brian Gleeson and Jessica Paré (Megan Draper from Mad Men) as well as a host of Irish comedic talent.  I co-edited the film with Tony Kearns and it was quite simply one of the best experiences I’ve had in an edit suite. Working with the Burke brothers in getting the film finished was exactly how I wanted editing a feature film to be, creatively challenging, hard, rewarding work interspersed with regular quotes from Seinfeld and the US Office. The lads, producer John Wallace and especially writer Pierce Ryan can all be justifiably proud of what is a cracking film.

Twenty-something Alan is down on his luck. Stood up at the altar and recently fired from his banking job, he finds himself working with his mother as a part-time tourist advisor at Dublin Airport.  It’s there he comes face to face with first love Alice, stuck on standby for a flight home to New York. Their summer romance ended eight years previously with Alan promising to return to the US one day. He never did, and they haven’t spoken since. Seizing his chance, Alan convinces a reluctant Alice to stay one more night in Dublin. Over the course of an unforgettable evening, they may just realise that they are more compatible than ever. But time is running out on this brief encounter. When does an unexpected second chance, become the one you’ve always been looking for?

STANDBY is about what happens when your 20’s don’t go how you planned and falling in love, with a girl and a city again.

Bergmann gets IFTA nod and other news

Delighted to say that the IFTA Short film nominations were announced last night and among them was a nod for The Last Days of Peter Bergmann. Coupled with last weeks nominations its been a pretty amazing week. Also among those nominations is a nod for Rubai which was directed by ‘Páidi Ó’Sé…‘ director Louise Ni Fhiannachta, so I was delighted for her as well.

As you may know Bergmann played at Sundance earlier this year and after one of the screenings director Ciaran Cassidy took part in a Q&A which was filmed and you can watch below.

Bergmann also played last week at the True/False festival in Michigan

In other festival news.
‘When Ali Came to Ireland’ played at the Toronto Irish Film Festival last weekend and went down a storm apparently

weather report01
The Short Film ‘The Weather Report’ which was directed by my brother Paul and which I had the great pleasure of editing has been selected to have its world premiere at the upcoming Belfast Film Festival at the start of April which is great news.

OneOceanNoLimits2
The documentary ‘One Ocean:No Limits’ that I co-edited last year with filmmaker Sarah McCann screens this coming Sunday in San Francisco as the closing film of the Ocean Film Festival. It also has a few more festival screenings in the next few months before its screening on RTE later this year.

The US Version of ‘Men at Lunch’ which I did some work on also screened in San Fran this week as part of the Irish American crossroads festival

Paidi O'Se pic 1
The aforementioned ‘Páidi Ó’Sé: Rí an Phároiste’ will screen as part of the Dingle Film Festival this St.Patricks day weekend. I’m planning on making it down for this years event for what should be a special screening. The film is showing at 8:00am on our national holiday right after the country’s earliest parade. There is also talk of an Irish breakfast happening before, after or during the screening. I’m hoping for all three options. ‘Bergmann’ is also playing at this festival.

See Sundance short ‘The Last Days of Peter Bergmann’ in Dublin

Sundance finished over the weekend and among the Irish representation was Ciaran Cassidy’s film ‘The Last days of Peter Berrmann’ which I had the great pleasure of cutting last year. By all accounts the film went down really well over there and Ciaran was delighted with the response. Now, there is an opportunity for people in Dublin to see the film.

It plays this Thursday, Jan 30th as part of Futureshorts in the Freemasons Hall, 17-19 Molesworth Street Dublin from 7-10.

After the screening there will be a Q&A with director Ciaran Cassidy and my good self. God help us!

Tickets are available for the event here

Ciaran recently took part in a fantastic interview with Amy O’Connor for Prowlster and you can read that piece here

Future Shorts is the largest short film network in the world and it is run in Dublin by Happenings and LeCool

The Winter Season they present to you has 6 films from France, Poland, Serbia, Finland & Afghanistan – it is going to be a truly international excursion into the world of shorts.

Emerge from the underground in search of a seed in Eduardo Williams’ “That I’m falling” I Que Je Tombe Tout le Temps (France, 2013), follow two Polish sisters while they seek out their mother in “Out of Reach” (Poland, 2011) by Jakub Stozek, and witness a rather unexpected incident at a convenience store in the animation “Blind Spot” (France, 2007). Directors Nedeljkovic & Majdak from Serbia take you on an extraordinary trip to Rabbitland (2012), while Jenny Toivoniemi shows you a date of a different kind in her film “The Date” (Finland, 2012) and finally Sam French invites you to join in the world of Afghanistan’s “Buzkhasi Boys” (Afghanistan, 2011) to see a different story of coming of age of two best friends.

King of the travellers TV3 at 9

The film ‘King of the Travellers’ which I edited back in 2012 will have its Irish TV premiere Tuesday at 9pm on TV3. Check it out. Here’s the trailer

Grounded in the traditions of the Irish Traveller community, King of the Travellers follows John Paul Moorehouse on his destructive quest to uncover the truth about his father’s killer. John Paul’s desire for revenge is swayed as he falls for Winnie Power, the daughter of the man he suspects killed his father.
To ensure authenticity in the film, Travellers were cast to play the Traveller roles, many of whom had never acted before. With a nod to the Sergio Leone and John Ford Westerns of the last century, King of the Travellers is an explosive contemporary take on Traveller life.

The Film premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in July 2012 and went on to be nominated for an IFTA for Costume design. It also screened at film festivals in the States and in Scandinavia.

The Film opened in Irish Cinema’s on April 19th 2013 and stayed in the cinema for a remarkable 4 weeks.

Sight and Sound

Earlier this year the film King of the Travellers was released nationwide here in Ireland and in the UK. The release in the Uk meant that the film was reviewed in some of the biggest media outlets in the movie business. Seeing the film reviewed in all the big uk papers was very cool, especially being one of the last films Philip French reviewed in the Observer. As a very big film buff growing up, this meant a huge amount to that part of my make-up. The coolest thing of all though was seeing my name printed in ‘Sight And Sound’ Magazine, the long running BFI monthly magazine. I was really thrilled with it.
